What is a bioclimatic pergola and how does it work? EcoSky, piston and scissor options

A bioclimatic pergola is a roof of motorised aluminium louvres that rotate at least 105° to open and close. Open, it lets sun and air in; closed, rain drains through channels in the louvres. There are three options: EcoSky, piston and scissor.

What is a bioclimatic pergola?

A bioclimatic pergola is an opening roof of motorised aluminium louvres. The louvres rotate on their own axis: open, they let daylight and air in; closed, they keep out rain and sun. SkyArt Group, an authorised Albert Genau manufacturing dealer, makes and installs it in Istanbul. Product page: bioclimatic pergola.

How does it work?

  • Louvres rotate on their axis with a motor and T-10 timing belt, opening at least 105°.
  • The louvres are channelled inside, so water and dust collected on top do not spill when opening.
  • Water flows into gutters on all four sides and drains through the front legs.
  • Operated by remote; an iOS/Android app and rain, sun and wind sensors are optional.
  • Concealed LED lighting on four sides is adjustable with a dimmer.

Three options: EcoSky, piston, scissor

OptionHow it worksSuits
EcoSkyTilt (rotates in place only)Those wanting an affordable option
PistonSide pistons rotate the louvres in place up to 110° (sun-shade, ventilation, rain modes); optionally a rear motor then stacks them backThose who mostly use the roof closed or opened in place and will service it every 6 months
ScissorPanels are linked; as the rear motor retracts, the roof opens from front to back; no control boardThose wanting the roof fully open and a simpler, low-maintenance system

What to watch

  • At least 1.5 m façade width is needed; balconies and top-floor roofs are possible (balcony and roof).
  • Regular service is essential; an annual piston and rail check is recommended (maintenance list).
  • In closed winter use, ventilation and humidity control prevent condensation (condensation).
  • Have the electrical lines checked; unbalanced voltage damages electronic boards.
  • Installation takes about 1 day after production; motor and mechanics carry a 2-year warranty.

Closing the sides

Use zip screens or guillotine glass. For all drawbacks: disadvantages of a bioclimatic pergola.

How long does installation take?

About 1 day after production.
