Does guillotine glass let in water, and is it sturdy? Sealing, materials and durability

04.11.2026 5 min read SkyArt Group

Guillotine glass made to measure and installed correctly seals against water, noise and heat when closed; leaks usually come from a pane left open, dirty brush seals or a connection detail. With 2 mm aluminium, stainless bearings and tempered glass, it is a sturdy system.

Short answer

When closed, guillotine glass provides water, sound and heat insulation. In the field we see it as one of the most trouble-free glass enclosure systems. When it does leak, the cause is rarely the product itself; it is usually a pane that is not fully closed, dirty seals or a connection detail from installation. As an authorised Albert Genau manufacturing dealer, SkyArt Group makes these systems to measure in Istanbul and installs them with its own team.

Is it sturdy? Look at the materials

ComponentSkyArt guillotine glassWhy it matters
Aluminium profile2 mm wall thicknessKeeps frames and channels true for years.
Glass8–10 mm tempered or 4+12+4 double glazingTempered glass is far stronger than ordinary glass; double glazing improves insulation.
Movement8 stainless steel bearings in the side channelsKeeps the pane moving evenly.
Lifting3 × 25 mm cable-reinforced belt (chain on some systems)The pane is carried on both sides and does not fall (can guillotine glass fall?).
SealingBrush seals in the side framesBlocks wind and dust; keep them clean.

Likely causes if it leaks

  1. Pane not fully closed: if the glass was stopped with a gap at the top, rain can get in. Close it fully when it rains.
  2. Dirty or displaced seals: dust and leaf debris weaken the seal. Clean the rails with a dry brush (cleaning guide).
  3. Connection and installation details: the joints between frame and wall, floor or ceiling are where water looks for a way in. Service should check them.
  4. Uneven floor or wrong measurements: systems not made to measure or not levelled can leave gaps between glass and frame.

Do not try to fix a leak by dismantling the system; opening it voids the warranty. All our products carry a 2-year warranty, extended with regular maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Does a guillotine glass balcony let in water?

Made and installed correctly, it seals against water when closed. If it leaks, the pane may not be fully closed, the seals may be dirty or a connection detail may be at fault; service should check it.

Is a guillotine glass balcony sturdy?

Yes. With 2 mm aluminium, 8 stainless bearings, tempered or double glazing and belts or chains on both sides, it is one of the most trouble-free glass systems we install.

What should I do if it leaks?

Check that the pane is fully closed and the rails are clean; if it continues, call service rather than dismantling it.

Does guillotine glass insulate against heat?

Yes when closed; for higher insulation choose the 4+12+4 double-glazed model.

Does water collect in the bottom profile of guillotine glass?

Guillotine glass bottom profiles have drainage holes. Water driven in by wind and rain is discharged outwards through the sides.
