Which direction should a conservatory face? South or north, and what to plan for each

04.11.2026 4 min read SkyArt Group

There is no right or wrong direction for a conservatory; it is your choice. Orientation decides the measures, not the system: sunny sides need a ceiling blind (Sky Zip) and ventilation in summer, shadier sides need good insulation and heating that removes moisture.

Short answer: it's your choice

In our field experience, north or south makes no difference on its own for a conservatory; where it faces is up to how you want to use it. Orientation does not decide which system you choose, but which measures you plan alongside it. As an authorised Albert Genau manufacturing dealer, SkyArt Group makes and installs conservatories to measure in Istanbul.

What to expect and plan by orientation

SideWhat to expectPlan alongside
Sunny side (south, west)More daylight in winter; the glass roof heats up in summer.Sky Zip ceiling blind, opening side walls, double glazing
Shadier side (north)Cooler in summer; less solar gain in winter.Double-glazed roof and walls, heating that removes moisture
EastMorning sun.Shading matched to when you use it

Two issues in every direction

1. Summer heat

A glass roof lets solar heat in. In the field the answer is a Sky Zip blind under the roof, which stops the sun below the glass. See conservatory ceiling blind Sky Zip.

2. Winter condensation

Condensation is the most common complaint. Whatever the orientation, the space must be heated with a dehumidifier or an air-conditioning-type system. See how to heat a conservatory.

What matters more than orientation

  • Use: dining, seating or a plant room decides size and wall choices.
  • Roof type: fixed glass or opening? To open the roof in summer, consider a bioclimatic pergola or a sliding glass roof.
  • Wall system: guillotine glass on the view side, sliding or folding glass at the sides.
  • Permission: in apartment buildings check the management plan and owners' consent, and consult the municipality where needed.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction should a conservatory face?

There is no right or wrong direction; it is your choice. Orientation decides the measures to plan, such as shading, insulation and heating.

Does a south-facing conservatory overheat?

The glass roof lets heat in; a Sky Zip ceiling blind and opening side walls keep it under control.

Is a north-facing conservatory cold?

It gains less heat from the sun; plan double-glazed roof and walls and heating that removes moisture.

Why does condensation form in a conservatory?

Warm, humid indoor air condenses on cold glass. Heat the space with a dehumidifier or an air-conditioning-type system.
