Bioclimatic pergola drainage: where does water go and how to clean gutters

06.11.2026 5 min read SkyArt Group

On a bioclimatic pergola, rain collects in gutters and runs down inside the columns; it can be released inside the column or piped out with PVC. Cleaning gutters every 2–3 months, especially in early autumn and spring, prevents blockage.

Short answer

On a bioclimatic pergola with the louvres closed, rain joins the side gutter and runs down inside the column. The water can be released freely inside the column or carried to the desired point through PVC pipe inside the column. Gutters should be cleaned every 2–3 months to keep the system trouble-free.

How is water drained?

MethodHow it worksWhen
Free inside the columnWater runs down inside the column and is released at ground levelPlaces where water on the ground is not a problem
PVC pipe inside the columnA pipe runs through the column and feeds the rain drain or another pointTerraces, balconies and used floors

Gutter outlet holes are drilled with a 75 mm core bit. The drain position is decided at the first survey according to floor slope and existing rain drains. For installation steps see the installation article.

Cleaning the gutters

Over time gutters fill with leaves, twigs and bird droppings. They block most with leaves in autumn, so we recommend an extra check at the start of autumn and spring.

  • Frequency: every 2–3 months; more often among trees.
  • How: remove visible leaves and dirt by hand or with a soft brush, then run water to test the flow.
  • Caution: do not step on the louvres or climb onto the roof in a risky way; call service if in doubt.

A blocked gutter can overflow at the louvre edges or make it look like water is getting in. To tell these apart, read does a bioclimatic pergola leak?.

Do it with maintenance

We recommend periodic maintenance every 6 months; checking gutters and drains is part of it (bioclimatic pergola maintenance). All our products carry a 2-year warranty, extended for customers who keep up regular maintenance.
