There is no single price per m² for a winter garden. The size, whether the roof is fixed glass or opening, the glass type (laminated or insulated), the wall system (guillotine, sliding, folding), shading, heating and installation conditions set the price together. We explain how each affects the cost.
Why there is no single price per m²
"Winter garden prices" and "winter garden price per m²" are among the most searched questions. Yet two winter gardens of the same area can cost clearly differently, because a winter garden is not one product but a structure made of beams, roof, walls, shading and heating. Each choice changes the price.
Seven things that set the price
1. Size and shape
As well as the total area, the length of the frontage, the height and the number of corners matter. A straight terrace and an L-shaped or multi-cornered space need different materials and labour for the same area. SkyArt winter gardens use 100 × 160 mm aluminium beams; the larger the span, the more beams are needed.
2. Roof: fixed glass or opening?
- Fixed glass roof: the classic winter garden solution; strong insulation, little maintenance. See fixed glass roof.
- Opening roof: a bioclimatic pergola or retractable glass roof; the roof opens in summer. The motorised mechanism means a higher budget.
3. Glass type
4+4 laminated glass is used in the roof for safety; argon-filled insulated glass is chosen for better thermal insulation. Insulated glass costs more up front but lowers winter heating costs.
4. Walls
The wall system is a large part of the budget:
| System | Key feature | Effect on budget |
|---|---|---|
| Insulated sliding glass | Economical, good insulation | Lower |
| Folding glass | Opens the façade fully | Medium |
| Guillotine glass | Motorised, keeps the view clear, a balustrade when open | Higher |
A winter garden and a glazed balcony complement each other: the winter garden provides the roof and structure, the glass system the opening façade. More in: winter garden and glazed balcony.
5. Shading
For south-facing winter gardens, a Sky Zip screen can be added under the roof and zip screens outside. This item, which decides summer comfort, is priced separately.
6. Heating and ventilation
Underfloor heating, air conditioning, fan coils or infrared heaters are a separate item. Where the roof is a bioclimatic pergola, heating must use a system that removes moisture; otherwise condensation forms on the roof. More in: how to heat a winter garden.
7. Installation conditions
The floor condition, the need for a crane on a roof terrace, fixing to existing walls and the city of the project set the installation cost. For floor preparation: building a winter garden on a terrace.
Summary table
| Item | Effect on price |
|---|---|
| Size and shape | High |
| Roof (fixed / opening) | High |
| Wall system | High |
| Glass type (laminated / insulated) | Medium |
| Shading | Medium |
| Heating | Depends on the project |
| Installation conditions | Depends on the project |
Is a PVC-sheet winter garden the same as a glass one?
No. Spaces enclosed with PVC sheeting are cheaper, but their insulation, appearance and lifespan don't compare with glass systems. SkyArt builds winter gardens with glass roofs and glass walls on aluminium beams.
