Bağdat Avenue, Istanbul: an opening louvred roof over a restaurant garden
The brief
For a restaurant, the garden is the most valuable seating area, yet it stays empty on a rainy evening or under the midday sun. The owner wanted the garden open for service whatever the weather.
The solution
We built an opening louvred roof — a bioclimatic pergola — over the garden. When rain starts, the louvres close and service carries on; in summer they open, the garden breathes and hot air escapes from above.
Why it works for restaurants
- With a rain sensor, the louvres close at the first drops; staff do not need to step in.
- Concealed LED lighting completes the atmosphere for evening service.
- The sides can be closed with zip screens or guillotine glass when needed, for winter use too.
